When did you decide to go into wedding planning?

I didn't grow up dreaming of being a wedding planner. I always thought I would be a pediatrician or teacher. However, as I began choosing college classes, I realized that business was what really excited me. To be specific -- marketing and public relations. I moved to New York City after graduating from Ole Miss and got my first job in events and public relations, and that is where I stayed for three years. I loved the creativity. I loved that each new client brought new ideas or hurdles to jump over. The event industry was fast paced and ever changing, and that's what I craved. However, as a true Southerner, it was eventually time to return to my roots and move back to Alabama. After moving home, starting M. Elizabeth Events was the next logical step in my career.

What experience do you hope to give your brides?

Every bride comes into my office with a different story to tell, a different vision of what they're dream wedding looks like. My first job in the event industry was in New York City working in one of the most exciting cities in the world. I've lived amongst the Roman ruins and vineyards of Tuscany, and have traveled and studied abroad extensively. I think these life experiences help me to design and execute weddings that are planned perfectly to the couple's personality and vision instead of planning every wedding the same way.

What are some wedding trends you are loving?

I love seeing patterns incorporated in weddings. From envelope liners to reception details to table linens. The hint of a pattern gives definition and texture, and breaks up the common monotony of using the same linen on a sea of tables. I also adore the freehand illustrations that have been popping up on paper suites over the past year. What a perfect touch of personalization that tells your guests that your invitations are completely custom.

What is your favorite part of the wedding to plan?

I love it all or else I wouldn't be in it, but helping the bride and groom personalize their wedding and creating their vision is my favorite. I never want to plan "cookie cutter" weddings. I love getting to know our clients on a personal level so that their wedding isn't like anyone else's. Watching all the details come together is my absolute favorite.

What do you like to do on your days off?

Days off are rare in this industry. I love to travel. Anytime I have a few days off, I try to get away by going to our family lake home on Lake Martin. It's quiet and beautiful...and it always helps me to simply "catch my breath". If I have a week or more off, which only happens two to three times a year, you can most likely find me in New York City or on an island in the Caribbean. My motto has always been..."work hard to play hard."
